In our large social media survey in summer 2019, the best footballers in the world for the 2019/2020 season were voted over 1,000 times. It was a real neck and neck race at times. We also dedicated a few sentences to each player and gave our own assessment of whether they should be in the top 11 of the best footballers in the world. Of course, we also carried out a new survey for the 2020/21 season and made new assessments, which also take the last season into account. Here we go!
The best goalkeeper of the 2020/2021 season: Marc-André ter Stegen
Marc-Andre ter Stegen won the election for the best keeper this season in our poll. In the league, but also in the CL, he showed many grandiose saves in 18/19 and 19/20 and brought striker after striker to despair. The discussion about the number 1 in the German goal did not become quieter.
Note: In our survey of thebest goalkeepers in the world , Manuel Neuer is currently in 1st place, Ter Stegen in 2nd place. This is because the assessments were made at different times. It’s a real head-to-head race between the two of them.
The best left-back of the 2020/2021 season: Andrew Robertson
Robertson was with his offensive runs – just like his defensive partner on the right – one of the engines of Liverpool FC and a guarantee for the triumph in the Champions League 2019. He was also able to convince again in the 20/21 season. For some great players – such as Phil Neville – Robertson is considered the best left-back in the world. For the past seasons you can agree with a clear conscience.
The best central defender I of the 2020/2021 season: Sergio Ramos
Ramos is a living legend. For the national team an absolute record player, and also for the royal team, he has been delivering at the highest level for 15 years. It’s unbelievable how strong Ramos is still playing at his age. In addition to his outstanding duel behavior, he is also incredibly dangerous for goals. He recently scored his 100th goal for Real Madrid in November 2020 – an incredible number for a defender.
The best center-back II of the 2020/2021 season: Virgil Van Dijk
There is no question that Van Dijk belongs in the top 11. He has impressed across the board in the past few seasons. Van Dijk was sovereign and dominant in one-on-one fights and always dangerous when it comes to standards. Unfortunately he is currently injured (November 2020), we hope that he can get back to his old form.
The best right-back of the 2020/2021 season: Trent Alexander Arnold
Alexander Arnold was clearly the best right-back in the 18/19 season, even if other full-backs – especially Kimmich – also played great seasons. Without Arnold’s flanks, the legendary 4-0 win over FC Barcelona would not have been possible. Without Arnold, Liverpool would not have won the UCL. We can be curious to see how things will continue with the 20-year-old in the future. Also in the championship season of Liverpool 19/20 he delivered again properly.
The best central midfielder I of the 2020/2021 season: Joshua Kimmich
There is no question that Kimmich is now one of the best footballers in the world. He can do almost anything on the ball. But mentally he is also extremely strong. In addition, his leadership qualities are repeatedly praised by fellow players and coaches. Kimmich definitely belongs in the TOP 11 of the best players in 2020/2021, whether as a midfielder or defender.
The best central midfielder II of the 2020/2021 season: De Bruyne
De Bruyne had another outstanding season at Man City. He has become an integral part of the Citizens’ game. We are curious to see if he can lead Man City to major European successes. Nevertheless, he certainly has his place in the TOP 11 of the best players in the world 20/21.
The best right winger of the 2020/2021 season: Mohamed Salah
There can be no two opinions on the question of the best right winger. Mo Salah completely delivered again last season and crowned his strong performances with the CL title. His speed is almost impossible to defend, his technique and ball handling are getting better and better. You inevitably look old against Salah. Without question, he’s one of the best footballers in the world.
The best left winger of the 2020/2021 season: Sadio Mané
Mané is without question one of the best offensive players on the planet. His performances in Liverpool have been outstanding for years. Together with Salah (and Firmino) he forms perhaps the most dangerous offensive in recent years. Without Mané, the great successes Klopp was able to celebrate with LFC would have been difficult to imagine. He played a huge part in it. Mané deserves its place among the best of the best in 2020/2021.
The best striker I of the 2020/2021 season: Robert Lewandowski
It goes without saying that Lewandowski belongs in the TOP 11 of the best footballers in the world – and not just since last season. Since then it has been clear that he is not only one of the best in his position, he is probably even number 1 in the storm. No other striker comes close to Poland’s level. Even in his early 30s, Lewa doesn’t give the impression that he’s losing its liveliness. On the contrary: It looks like he’s only really getting started now. Bayern are lucky to have Lewa in their ranks.
The best striker II of the 2020/2021 season: Lionel Messi
There is actually no need to explain why Messi belongs in a top 11. For many, he is the best footballer in the world. Even if the big goal – winning the CL – did not work out in 2019 and a heavy defeat against FC Bayern was recorded in 2020: Messi is and will remain the measure of all things footballing. If he can now form a good team around himself, then FC Barcelona will also celebrate great successes again – if only because they have Messi.
What is your opinion on this? Who do you think should have ended up in the top 11 best footballers in the world for the 2020/2021 season? We would be happy to receive your comments!
